About Jane’s
Once a bakery frequented by Chicago’s elite and area steelworkers alike, the dusky blue, brick building, now home to Jane’s, has housed neighborhood businesses for over a hundred years. Upon entering, guests are awed by the pitched roof with its steadfast timber beams and the exposed brick walls—often displaying the work of local emerging artists. The wafting ceiling allows the intimate dining room and bar to feel simultaneously cozy and spacious. Guests of Jane’s are treated not only to acclaimed contemporary cuisine, but to a quintessential Chicago experience—one that casually allows the past to shine through in the present and is nothing less than romantic.
The restaurant has thrived on positive word-of-mouth, creating a loyal customer base not only in Bucktown, but throughout Chicagoland. Five years ago, Jane's owners eagerly satisfied customer requests and expanded in order to facilitate larger events, such as weddings, baby showers, and anniversaries. Built directly to the east of and connected to the original dining room, the additional space, often referred to as “The White Room,” is a gorgeous, yet understated, dining room, complete with a Calcutta marble bar, delicate crystal chandeliers, and soft votives. With ample seating for fifty-five diners or a sixty-five person cocktail affair, the room features a balance of modern sensibility and antique accents, including a vintage banquet and seasonal décor. A small raised stage, suitable for a jazz trio, a bridal party table or an expectant mother opening gifts, is nestled next to the large picture windows, which open onto the idyllic street. The space is designed to accommodate personal tastes—and is easily transformed to suit a wide variety of occasions.
The expansion of Jane’s was overseen by longtime general manager and co-owner, Julie Greenwalt, along with chef and co-owner Tony Recillas. The pair have worked closely together since assuming ownership in 2000. Shortly after Jane’s opened, Julie joined the team as a server and recognized immediately that it was a well-run establishment with obvious vision. Julie caught the hospitality bug at an early age from her mother, who ran a small catering business out of their Des Moines home. So, when the opportunity arose for Julie to manage and later own the restaurant, it was not a difficult decision.
Today, Jane’s is not only well-loved by Bucktown neighbors seeking a casual, friendly dinner; it has evolved into a favorite destination for friends wishing to share wine, great food, and conversation, as well as those celebrating monumental events. Though Jane’s has grown in space and scope, it remains true to its mission to provide tasteful and innovative cuisine—using simple and fresh ingredients—in a pleasing atmosphere. And like the building where Jane’s started, its history will always be a part of its charm.

Jane’s goes to great measures to ensure that its food tastes “homemade,” prepared healthy, fresh and clean, with many vegetarian-friendly options, and no deep-fryer in sight. The additions to space and menu make an already great restaurant that much better. As Greenwalt says, “We want people to feel like they’re at home.” Jane’s certainly makes it easy.
